For those of you reading this blog, Andrew Gunderson’s son has a page up. Some ebay listings are calling his paintings “Hudson River” and this is an attempt to link him with the Hudson River School to gain a few bucks. He did not paint there. He traveled a bit out west and lived in Monee Illinois. Many of his firelight by the lake or river paintings are scenes that could be in almost any state in the Union. The one I grew up with always suggested a high mountain lake and since I grew up in Wyoming, I pictured it a Wyoming scene. My grandmother bought it in Chicago in the 1930s and I am sure she liked it because it reminded her of home. Gunderson did not refer to many specific places, but rather a state his mind, a peaceful place. I will post a link to his son’s page.
Andrew Gunderson painted from his imagination, did not focus on the Hudson River landscapes.

I am not the person to ask…his son or grandson is the one. the website is http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.gunderson/143.1.2 I have one and it is not titled, nor was the one I sold on ebay. He may have named some, but I think not. Try that website and see if you can get his family to enlighten you…

I have only seen a couple of his pastels go on ebay for more than $250. and most sell for around $180. I sold one on ebay for $180. and it was a nightmare shipping it. Now I do not know what the auction houses are getting for good Gunderson pastels, but since he was sooooo prolific, the market is pretty soft. The curse of the artist is that the more he paints, the less his work brings (supply and demand) unless the work is totally unique (his is most definitly of a generic type) or if the work is of such superior quality that people are knocked out by the sight. Gunderson was a meat and potatoes painter who spent his life knocking out work that was competent but not fantastic or wonderful, so his images are a bit run of the mill. Nevertheless, he is gaining status as the years go by. If you send me jpegs of your pastels, I can post them up along with your contact info and you might get a collector interested. I did that for a gal a couple of months ago and she did manage a sale. Good luck…………candace lange
